âTessa. I have a problem,â Betty said.
âWhat problem is that?â Tessa asked.
âI need a new dress for the dance. Iâve worn all of the dresses that I have a thousand times and I really would like to have something new for the event. I was wondering if you would like to go to the mall with me,â Betty said.
âThat sounds like fun. Iâll be ready,â Tessa said.
Betty and Major arrived at Tessaâs five minutes later. Major was dressed up in a nice vest and a harness so that he looked official. Betty wasnât trying to pass him off as a service dog and certainly didnât have a fake vest for that, but she found that if she simply dressed him up, no one asked questions.
The two women looked at dresses in several different stores. Neither one of them found anything suitable until the sixth store that they walked in.
Betty found a dress that was perfect for her. The crimson color perfectly highlighted her figure and accented the red highlights in her hair. It was in the style of a traditional Chinese dress, with the high color and the wooden buttons. There were delicate flowers all over the dress â enough to make it stand out, but not enough to make it look gaudy.
âYou are a beautiful woman,â Tessa said to Betty as she modeled the dress.
Betty said, âI think that Iâm going to get this one.â
When Betty came back out, Tessa sneaked a peak at the price tag on the dress.
âYou know, you are getting this dress for one of my events. Why donât you let me get it for you?â she asked.
âIâm good. I promise that I can afford it,â Betty said, with a smile. âThank you, though.â
Tessa sometimes worried that her friends thought that she lorded her money over them. The fact was that she could buy the dress and it wouldnât even make a dent to her finances. However, she knew that while Betty made good money writing code and helping companies with their cyber security, she wasnât wealthy.
âNow, letâs find you a dress,â Betty said.
Bettyâs tone let Tessa know that she was in no way offended that Tessa offered to buy the dress for her.
After looking around, Tessa found a beautiful dress. It was a dark velvety emerald green with a v neck. It fit her perfectly.
âI guess that weâre going to have to let the guys know the color of our dresses,â Tessa said. âIâm pretty sure that Johnny owns a cummerbund in every color just so that he can match what Iâm wearing.â
âLiam just sticks with white. It matches everything,â Betty said. âHe likes simple things.â
The women paid for their dresses and were heading toward the food court when they ran into Paula.
âDoes she live at the mall?â Betty whispered to Tessa before Paula was close enough to hear the exchange.
âI donât know,â Tessa said. âShe might. Some people do.â
âHello, Tessa. Betty,â Paula said.
Tessa noticed that her tone was a lot more civil this time than it had been in the past.
